How to Be a Friend to Those Grieving or Waiting

Since sharing about our struggle with infertility publicly, I've had many conversations with so many of you who have either walked this road or experienced a similar journey with waiting, grief, or disappointment. When these conversations come up, typically we acknowledge how very lonely these seasons can be. I've been so grateful to have such an amazing support system (and even then, it can feel lonely!) but I've realized that is not the norm for most going through hard things. I learned from an event I hosted at our church for women going through what we are, it seems people are going through hard things alone, or their friends / family will tell them they are here for there, but then never actually show it. We have GOT to change this! We were created for community, to do life together with the people God has placed in our lives. It's time to show up for our people and love them well!

A LITTLE OF OUR STORY:

Up to this point in our lives, we've never been in a position to "need" anything from someone, other than when my husband's dad passed away when we first got engaged. My husband's family has a ton of close family-friends who cared for their family so well. We were still sort of new to our church, but even they sent us cards of encouragement and my few friends checked in on us. Other than that, we've had a wonderful marriage (of course we have hard days mixed in, too, let's be real!), we have been healthy, have had good jobs, we both really enjoy what we do, we feel loved by our families, etc. I have always naturally loved doing things for others and putting together celebrations (enneagram 2 here!), so I have been the one to set up meal trains for friends who have babies or are sick, thrown many showers, and the like. These things have never been a burden for me, I love doing them.

But then this season of infertility hit us and I didn't feel like myself. I couldn't keep throwing the baby showers and setting up the meal trains for friends. As much as I hate to admit this, it has been so hard for me to keep being that person in our grief. I am learning it is okay to take a step back and care for yourself (thanks to counseling!)

One day a friend texted me and told me she was bringing over a meal to us that night. She didn't even know I had just gotten the dreaded sign that meant I wasn't pregnant again-- she just felt like she wanted to do something for us. I started crying when I read her message, because we've never had a meal brought to us before; let alone on a hard day. I technically didn't NEED a meal that night; McCann could have made dinner or we could have gotten take out, but the fact that a friend saw a way to serve us in our grief meant so much to us.

Bringing people food-- real, tangible nourishment-- is a beautiful picture of and parallel to the nourishment that happens to our soul when a friend steps in to your pain with you. It says "I'm here with you, I care for you. I'm hoping with you when you can't even hope for yourself." It shows people that God sees them, when that might be a far-off feeling to them.

This really hit me and I want to remember it forever! I want to listen to the small voice that nudges me to bring someone a meal, write someone a note, or ask to babysit someone's kids on a random Thursday, because you never know what your kindness will do for their heart.

Last November I had a surgery to check for endometriosis, which the doctor ended up finding and removing. One friend texted my other friends and set up meals for us for a whole week while I recovered. One of my best friends came over the night before my surgery with a sweet care package for me; complete with an electric massager (which, by the way, is a amazing!), a cozy sweater, some treats, and an encouraging note. Another friend sent flowers, another mailed a care package. I was just blown away by the kindness I was shown that week! One of my deepest fears about the surgery was that I wouldn't be taken care of (this might sound crazy, but this was the first surgery I've had, so I was very nervous, especially without having my mom nearby!) and the Lord completely took care of those fears.

Through my people, God said "I've got you" over and over.

I feel so blessed that this has been my story. My hope is that everyone who's walking through something hard -- whether it be sickness, death, depression, having a hard time with the behavior of a child, a single parent, divorce or marriage issues, or infertility -- would have a support system ready and able to SHOW them their love.

I've shared these ideas on instagram before, but thought it's worth sharing here, too. Below are some things to avoid saying and helpful/kind things TO say and do for someone struggling. Most of these will be specific to infertility / miscarriage, but the sentiments can be applied to all kinds of hard seasons.

- Anything to the effect of "just relax, it'll happen when you least expect it!" or "stop stressing" is particularly difficult to hear. Pretty much any form of advice in this way, and especially medical advice,  is not helpful and not kind.

- Telling someone "it will happen, I know it!" sounds harmless enough, but for me this actually puts a lot of pressure on me AND it's simply not true. This truly may not happen for us. I know it feels good to tell someone this (especially when you don't know what to say), but for me, this is false hope and adds pressure. God is in full control and only He knows how He is going to build our family!

- "Let me know if you need anything" is never the right way to approach serving someone. Typically people will not just let you know when they need something. I would never text a friend and ask them to bring me dinner ;)

- Two very hard statements to hear are: "At least you know you can get pregnant" to those who have experienced miscarriages, and "at least you haven't lost any babies" to those who have infertility. Please, please do not say these!

- Being nosey and asking someone you don't know well about their medical issues or experiences could be difficult for the person struggling. I am okay sharing with close best friends friends, my mom and counselor, but not comfortable with most others (even family, and that's okay to have a boundary!) so try to avoid asking questions. Let the person struggling lead the conversation. You'll see how comfortable they are quickly.

- Try to avoid the topic of conversation constantly being about the very thing your friend is struggling with. If you're in a group of friends and you notice that babies, pregnancy (especially complaining about it) and motherhood is the normal topic of conversation, try to switch it up so your friend doesn't feel left out!

- If you're pregnant and announcing publicly, don't expect a big, happy reaction from a friend who is going through miscarriage or infertility. It's not that they're not happy for you, but it is really hard news to digest and be expected to give a good, live reaction. Try to tell the person ahead of time privately, perhaps in a text (that's my preferred way).

+ the single most encouraging and sweet thing someone can tell me personally is "you are going to be an amazing mom one day!" You really can't go wrong with this :)

+ Sending an encouraging text or card with something like this will be so appreciated: "I want you to know I'm here for you and praying for you daily. You are so brave and I see so much ______ (fill in the blank!) in you. I'm so sorry you're going through this right now, but I'll continue to hope for you!" Let your friends know you're thinking of them often! I have multiple friends who just text me every so often with something like this. No questions, no need to respond. Just thoughtfulness!

+ ENTER IN and SHOW UP! This is my biggest piece of advice for those who are clearly in the inner circles of those who are struggling. Take a meal (don't ask if they want one, just tell them you'd like to bring a meal this week and ask which day works!), send a note, drop off a Starbucks or flowers, get your friend a piece of jewelry that symbolizes their journey and hope. Show up in tangible ways!!

+ If you're in a group of friends and you notice that babies, pregnancy (especially complaining about it) and motherhood is the normal topic of conversation, try to switch it up so your friend doesn't feel left out.

+  Remember important dates (like ultrasounds, testing, surgeries, etc.) and send a simple text letting them know you're praying for them that day. I have a friend who does this and it means everything to me; like she really cares so much that between her own busy schedule, she remembers me! (Again, this is for those who are in the inner circles of the person struggling. It would be hard to for someone struggling to receive this type of checking in from someone who they don't feel comfortable sharing with, so try to gauge this accurately.)

+ Tell your friend that you want to be here for them-- however much they want to share with you, you're there and ready to listen.

+ If a friend has lost a loved one or a baby, say their name and remind your friend that you haven't forgotten them.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Over the years I've walked with many friends through difficult things. Everything from miscarriage, stillbirth, marriage strain and hardship. I know it can feel messy and awkward at times to enter into someone else's grief, but it's always worth it. And now I'm walking through our own hard thing and my friends are right along side me and I am so grateful. This is what friends are for; we go through different seasons at different times so we can be there for each other! We're never meant to walk alone.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."

Favorites Moments & Products of 2021

Happy 2022! I know we're halfway through the month now, but I couldn't forget to share some favorite moments and things with you from the previous year before moving on. 2021 was one of our hardest years yet due to our struggle with infertility and a couple of hardships in our families, but we've also seen how near God has been to us in this time. I'm so grateful for the pockets of joy we found, amidst a really challenging year.

First up, I'll share a couple favorite moments and then I'll share 15 of my favorite products below!

MOMENTS & MEMORIES:

1. We finished our basement! We worked on this from fall of 2020-January of 2021 and it was so worth it! I'll have to show you how it looks as of now soon.

2. Our February trip to Florida. It was so beautiful and warm! We needed this time away so badly together.

3. We finished our bedroom design by getting a new rug, hanging our pretty artwork and getting a new mirror. It has made me love our bedroom so much!

4. My flower garden produced so many little blooms this summer, I never had to buy flowers from the store from July-October. Bringing in fresh flowers (almost daily!) from just steps away in our own backyard was so fun and gave me some very needed joy.

5. One of my best friend's and I got to do the florals for a friend's wedding in July. Our friend was also in our youth group when she was in high school and we were her leaders, so it was extra special!!

6. We went out to California and got to meet my new niece, Ruth, when she was just 2 weeks old. She is such a doll and I love her so much! It was the same trip to CA where we got to stay at my parent's new house. It's been really fun to see their new home come together.

7. Celebrating 5 years of marriage in the place where we actually got married was so sweet! Carmel will always be one of the most special places to us.

8. I got to visit one of my best friend's in the hospital to meet her new baby girl. Her mom was busy taking care of their other daughter, so I got to be their visitor and I nearly lost it when she told me I could come meet her at just a couple hours old. It was the best, most precious thing!!

9. I was met with such encouragement and love when I shared that we are currently walking through a season of infertility. We are so humbled that so many of you are praying for us as we wait for baby Beel. Thank you, friends!

10. This sounds so funny to make my favorite memories of 2021, but here we go: in November I had a surgery relating to fertility and I was so nervous about it. I'd never had surgery before. The procedure went so well, my recovery was better than I could have expected AND we got some answers for the first time since being on this journey. We are praying these findings lead us to a healthy pregnancy soon, but even if that isn't the outcome, I am so thankful that God brought me through an experience I was so terrified of and helped me be brave along the way.

11. We loved our time in California for Christmas. Seeing our niece again for her first Christmas was really special and our trip to Tahoe was so fun. We also had a really fun New Years Day with my husband's family in Michigan. Thankful for some family time!

PRODUCTS:

1. Weezie Towels. They're so soft and plush!! We have hand towels for our powder room and I also have the dark washcloth, which is great for removing makeup because it won't stain!

2. Our Powder Bathroom Redo! I need to get this photographed and then I'll be sharing it all with you. As you probably remember, my friend hand-painted these flowers and it looks like wallpaper, which is so fun!

3. Averr Aglow. I have found some great skincare products (all clean) for acne, which I've been dealing with for a while now due to hormones. I really like their entire acne line!

4. Lou & Grey signature soft blend sweatpants and sweatshirts. This makes the list every year, because they're that good!

5. Our new nightstands. Finishing off our bedroom in 2021 was definitely a highlight for me! The nightstands really completed the design and can I just say, as a designer and 31 year old, it's real nice to have matching nightstands for the first time ;)

6. Olive & June nail polish. This is my new favorite cleaner nail polish and it's only $8 per bottle!

7. Voxer. I know this sounds so funny and probably outdated, but I have loved using this voice-messaging app to stay in touch with some friends who live far away. It's so convenient, as you can leave a voice message and then the recipient can respond whenever they have time! It's SO much easier than voice-texting within your regular texting app.

8. Slippers. I know, I know, the criss-cross slippers are so trendy. I got them last year for Christmas after researching a ton of brands on Amazon. I totally lucked out and found the best brand! I loved them all year round (though in the winter in Michigan, I did wear them with socks ha!) I wore them so much, I needed a new pair this Christmas. For about $25, replacing them didn't seem like a big deal.

9. Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy. This book was definitely the most influential book I read this past year, especially as my husband and I have been walking through infertility. If you know anyone who is hurting or grieving or in a season of waiting, I highly recommend this to not only them, but also you, so you can come alongside them in their struggles!

10. Fleece Lined Leggings. These are amazing! They're meant for outdoor winter work outs, but we all know I don't do that ;) For me, I just wear them on an everyday basis in winter because #puremichigan. They're so warm and comfortable and they have zipped pockets for your phone.

11. Ellis Brooklyn Perfume. As you probably know, I'm pretty concious of what is in the products I use for my home cleaning and beauty routines. One of the things that has the most toxins in it is the word "fragrance". Did you know that companies don't have to disclose ingredients in their fragrances because it's considered a "trade secret"?! I've always known perfumes weren't great for us to be ingesting, but I couldn't get away from it because I want to smell good!! ;) I would just spritz a tiny amount of the perfume on my clothes, not my body, for years and that was definitely better than putting it on my skin, but I wanted to find a more clean scent in the long run. Happy to report I finally found it!! Ellis Brooklyn's fragrances are beautiful and a much, much cleaner option. They're super conscious of the ingredients they use! My favorite scent is RROSE, but I also love FABLE & SWEET

12. Barefoot Dreams Blanket. This is about as boujee as it gets over here! My mom got me the blanket for a birthday present and I've literally not parted with it since November 1st. I sleep with it and sit on the couch with it every single day. McCann knows he can't use it ;) Ha! It's that good!

13. Neck Massager. I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but this thing is life changing. For under $40, it's truly incredible! The massage modules are strong, the heat setting is so great, and you can use it on your neck but also move it all the way down your back. My best friend got this for me before my surgery in November and I truly could not be more grateful!

14. Facial Steamer. This is making the list again, because it was truly a simple joy of 2021 for me! I use it once a week before a my charcoal mask. It really helps open the pores to unclog everything.

15. A couple storage items: a lazy susan for our fridge to conserve space, woven baskets for a stylish way to hold toilet paper, and a hanging wrapping paper organizer. All of these small items have made my life so much easier!

Okay, that should do it! Now I want to hear your favorite moments, memories and products from 2021!

Have a wonderful week!
xoxo

Farewell, Childhood Home!

Today is officially moving day for my mom and dad! Our family has been in this house since I was 7 years old, so as you can imagine, this move comes with a lot of emotions. I heard once that moving should be hard, because it means you dug in there, you made memories, formed relationships, got attached, felt safe and lived lots of life there. That was certainly true for our family in this house!

Over the 23 years my parent's have owned this house, we've experienced a lot of joy (we got our first and second dog in this house, hosted birthday parties, graduations and Christmas with family, both my brother and I got engaged while living here and also brought our spouses here to visit, we hosted prom photos, surprise parties, easter egg hunts and a halloween party I will never forget when I was a sophomore in high school), but we've also gone through hard times here, as any family would.

What stands out to me most, though, is how inside these walls, our family got through everything together. There was so much love, forgiveness, learning about life and growing up here. I will always love this house and always refer to it as home

I was so glad that we got to take a couple of family photos at the house before they moved. I'll always love these!

I thought I would share some photos from the listing, as a way to remember it for years to come!

More details on the living and dining room here.

More details on the family room (before we painted the brick white-- we did that for the listing, but now my parents agree they wish they did it years ago!)

This is my parent's bedroom-- always loved the ceilings and the doors out to the backyard.

More details on their bathroom remodel here.

The guest room (lots of sleepover memories in here!)

My bedroom:

And the backyard. This is probably what we'll miss the most!

Below the deck about 100 feet is a creek (well usually...right now it's dried up!)

Thank you for all the love and memories, pretty house! We hope the new owners love it as much as we did (they do! They're so sweet and excited about it, which makes it feel less sad.) And thank you to my parents, who made this house what it was for us. My mom made it feel so welcoming and my dad made it feel so safe. We're excited to continue making memories together at the new house!

The best is yet to come!

Memory Lane: My Childhood Bedroom Designs Through the Years

Boy, do I have a treat for you today! I'm looking back at all the ways I've had my childhood room at my parent's house decorated over the years! These are only the years since I've had a blog (took a deep dive into my blog archive and wow...just wow ;)) but it has still seen a lot of change in just 11 years! I will tell you the design before the blue and green look was just straight up purple everything with huge flowers. Think Limited Too meets Lisa Frank.

Since my parent's are moving this week, I thought it'd be fun to take a look back on this special room.

This was how it looked in high school. All the walls were blue, with one lime green accent wall. I remember this being very stylish!! Ha ;) You'll see more down below, when the room looked like this, I even staple gunned fabric on the back of the bookshelves to give more color to the room. I distinctly remember thinking "they should pick me for Trading Spaces!" when I did that.

Anyways, in college I switched up the room to something more streamlined and updated. This was a fun one and I'll always remember this room because it was the first time I had anything professionally photographed for my blog!!

Then right before we got married (5 years ago) we redid the room again with a queen bed, so we could actually stay in the room together ;) We toned it WAY down and just went simple.

I refinished this dresser when I did the college mint green makeover. My parents just sold it this week since they don't need it at the new house!

Okay, I have to show you how my bookshelf styling evolved in the room as well (notice the fabric I attached to the walls behind the shelves!) HIGH SCHOOL:
COLLEGE:

Lastly, I have to show you what I did to my the guest room at their house. After freshman year in design school, I was itching to experiment with color. I told them we needed an accent wall in the guest room and the bright coral from the bedding would be perfect. (I'm dying a little inside right now!) My parent's actually let me do this to their house!!!

But don't worry, we turned it around a couple years later when I graduated college ;)

And then these were the listing photos of the house from a couple months ago:

Guest room...

My room...

BIG thanks to my mom and dad who let me use their home as a total experimental canvas. They never turned down my ideas and always made me feel so good about using my creativity (even when the ideas were, indeed, terrible!) This was so fun (and embarrassing) to look back on. I hope you liked it, too! And if you've been a long time reader...I truly don't know why you stuck around for the first 3-4 years of my blog. HA! Thank you!!

Happy Monday!

2021 Word of the Year

Well, here we are 4 weeks into the new year (crazy!) and I'm finally sharing my word of the year with you! I don't always do this, and to be honest, I didn't think a word was going to hit me this year. Then one day while I was praying and asking God to give me a clear purpose to work on this year, a verse came to mind.

"Delight yourself in the Lord."

Delight!

I quickly went to the back of my Bible where there's a concordance and looked up the word "delight" and "delights". I looked up all the verses with these words in them to see if anything struck me as something the Lord was trying to show me. When I came to Jeremiah 15:16, I knew I had found what God wanted to instill in me for the coming year.

"Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
    O Lord, God of hosts."

Delight means to take great pleasure; happiness, joy, glee. There are a couple ways I want to remember this word throughout the year:

1. Very literally, like the verse says, I want to make God's word the delight of my heart. I want to need his Word like I need food! I want to come to love it even more. It's easy to get stuck in the rut of just reading the Bible to check off the list, to sing to God in church because it's just that part of the service. But this year I want to cultivate a love for and joy of God that makes me say He truly is a delight of heart.

2. I want to find delight in small, mundane things; in the everyday graces God gives us. Maybe it's the leaves changing or puppy snuggles. Maybe it's sweet friendships or maybe it's remembering that doing the laundry for my husband is a gift because it means he's here and we're together. Thanking God for these gifts, maybe even out loud, is something I want to do more of.

3. I want to create delight for those around me! To me, this would be going beyond the mundane and creating special moments, celebrations, dinners, days and memories that are extra special by adding fun, beautiful, thoughtful touches to them. I'm very excited about this, as it is already in my nature!

4. I want to take delight in the relationships around me and bring delight to others. Enjoying my friendships, my marriage and my family more fully and actually being mindful of how I can be more delightful to be around are a couple things I want to work on.

So that's my word for the year! I'm excited about it. I'm ready to see what God has for me to learn through this.

Do you have a word for the year? If so, I'd love to hear it in the comments!

xoxo

20 Favorite Things of 2020

Well, it's time for my annual "favorite things" post where I share my favorite items and / or habits from the previous year. Some of these items I've shared before and some are new to me this year! Here are my top 20 from 2020:

ONE
Beautycounter's new concealer -- I was always a Shape Tape fan, but once I switched to safer beauty, I still couldn't find a cleaner option that was as good as Shape Tape. Well this year, that changed. Our new concealer is just as amazing and I'm thrilled! Let me know if you need help with a color match.

TWO
Lou & Grey sweatpants & sweatshirt. I've shared these many times before but honestly, I lived in them this last spring, fall and winter, so they deserve mentioning in case you're new here. I'm really not sure how to describe them other than they feel like actual butter and you'll need two pairs in case one is in the wash ;) I've never owned sweatpants until now (always just pjs or leggings) and I'm ALL IN. I got the sweatshirt for Christmas and it's just as dreamy. Size up if you want it more oversized!

THREE
Facial steamer -- I know I'm sharing a lot of beauty items, but what else was there to do when we were home most of the year?! I got this for Christmas and am already obsessed! I use it once a week and it helps open pores to prepare for masks and other serums/treatments and it's nice and warm so it's a wonderful, relaxing treat!

It's currently 20% off.

FOUR
Olive & June nail polish -- the brush is curved so it avoids getting polish on your cuticles. It's so nice and such an easy-to-apply formula. I also love that it's 7 free, so it's a lot safer than others!

FIVE
Walks around the lake with my friends -- we made this a couple times a week habit and it was amazing to get out, catch up and get Lincoln's energy out ;)

SIX
American Eagle leggings -- so soft, like butter!! I can run errands, do yoga and workout at home in them, but I'm not sure I'd work out at the gym (like running or elliptical) in them. Light work out, for sure!

SEVEN
Our living room artwork -- it really completed the room!

EIGHT
Podcasts!! Favorites include Made for This (faith), Journeywomen (faith), Scrubbing In (for fun), and a couple Bachelor ones ;) Ha!

NINE
Essential oils, my new diffuser and our humidifier (which you can also diffuse oils in!)

TEN
These Madewell jeans-- so comfortable without needing to wash to shrink between every single wear. I would size down because there's slightly more stretch to these than other Madewell's I've tried. Love the distressed knee!

ELEVEN
High frequency wand-- I have yet to even share this because I wanted to give it some time to see if it really worked. And it DOES! I've been experiencing some hormonal breakouts this year (that, plus maskne) and my facialist suggested this wand that oxygenates the blood which helps kill bacteria. I use it when I'm breaking out and it really helps with the inflammation. It also helps with fine lines and wrinkles, so yay!!

TWELVE
Bible highlighters! They are sort of like really thin, smooth crayons and I love them! We had to use a color coding system for bible study and these came in handy. No bleeding!

THIRTEEN
The "midi" dress. I have two (both sold out) and I love them both so much. I can't wait to add a few more to my wardrobe this spring! Here are some favorites:

FOURTEEN
This clean deodorant-- it's the best I've tried! I love the smell of both the coconut and the clean rose. I smell fresh all day!

FIFTEEN
This J.Crew Factory Coat-- McCann got it for me for Christmas and I love it! I was so worried it was going to be itchy, but it's not at all. We got it 50% off, so it was under $100. This exact one is sold out, but this one is similar! Or you can find an almost identical version at the regular J.Crew store. It's 50% off, has a little more length to it and more detailing on the pockets!

SIXTEEN
Our new living room pillows from Danielle Oakey Shop. I love the muted color and warm tones it adds to the room. (I already had the blue ones!)

SEVENTEEN
My new website! Rachel worked so hard on this design for me. This sparked some business ideas on my end and I'm SO excited about a big top secret project I'm going to be working on this year for you guys! More soon ;)

EIGHTEEN
Beautiful tile! I had so many client design projects that implemented stunning tile and I can't wait to show you this year!

NINETEEN
How could this even be a post about favorite things without mentioning my beloved garden?! It was definitely the highlight of 2020. I couldn't have done it without my favorite clippers (everywhere else is sold out of them!). One of my favorite things about my garden was my David Austin Garden Rose bush. This is the variety I have and they are delightful! They get really fragrant and blush pink with yellow centers on the bush, then when you cut them they turn white fairly quickly. They don't have a long vase life, but man I love them.

TWENTY
This year my husband and I started Amazon wishlists and shared them with each other. The items are not all from Amazon, but we keep them so that anytime a holiday comes up, or we just want to do something special for the other person, we know some items they would like. It's made gifting such a breeze!

Okay, now you! What are a couple of your favorite things from the last year?!
