Designer Files: Claire Brody Designs

I'm excited to be back today with another edition of our Designer Files series. This designer is one of the sweetest gals I know! I've had the pleasure of meeting her last October in Atlanta at The Bloom Workshop. She's a joy to be around, so kind and an extremely talented designer. Welcome Claire of Claire Brody Designs!

1. Name, business & blog

Claire Brody / Claire Brody Designs

2. Describe your style in 3 words.

Approachable, Bold, Unexpected

3. What is one of your favorite home projects or pieces in your home?

This is laughable, but I’d have to say our bar cart because it is the epitome of our home and us (my husband and I).  Probably not how you’re thinking though.  One day my husband decided we needed a fully stocked bar (I don’t even know what that entails), but I said okay.  Our home is a tight 900 square feet, and we have no extra space for a bar cart.  At the time I was using a cart as a nightstand in our guest room, but after my husband went all out at Spec’s, we needed a spot to house it all.  Our kitchen was going to bust if we put anything else in there, and the living room was next in line.  We are those people with a bar in the middle of our living room.

4. How did you get into design? What has been one of your biggest challenges as you have started your business?

I started backwards as a blogger before I got into decorating. I started my blog in 2014 after my husband and I got married. I was a dancer for 15 years and once I stopped dancing I felt like my creativity died. I also didn’t realize how much I needed to be in a creative environment. The blog started as a creative outlet and I really had no plans for it. I didn’t know the potential in blogging. I attended a few blog conferences (Bloom the Workshop being one of them) and my life changed. Maybe not overnight, but I immediately starting pursing blogging as a business and Claire Brody Designs was born in January of this year. I started with online decorating consultations which I still offer and am now starting to branch out with local design here in Austin. Another designer in town whom I hold very dear to my heart took me under her wing and became a mentor to me. She told me what I needed to do to set up a business because I truly didn’t know anything. I am forever grateful for her.

Blogging never gets boring and I realize that in 10 years ( 5 years even), it will not be anything like it is today. A part of being a creative entrepreneur is knowing that the industry is constantly changing and being able to adapt. I’d say the most challenging part is knowing (or not knowing) what’s coming next. I am open to furthering my career through blogging and/or decorating in the future, but knowing how to grow each of them in a way that works well together is a challenge.

5. Stripes or plaid?

I’d love to see either stripes or plaid used in an unexpected way.  I love them both in the right space.  Or even better, I’d love to see them used together!

6. Geometric or floral?

Floral all the way.  I’m not big on geometric prints, but a good floral….oh man.

7. Symmetry or asymmetry?

I recently realized that I am a symmetry person even though I lean towards an eclectic feel.  I need matching table lamps or I don’t feel put together.  I guess my need for symmetry reigns in my style a bit.

8. One decorating "rule of thumb" is:

Be intentional when you decorate.  I could go to Target and buy the entire Nate Berkus aisle just like the next person.  Lately I’ve been trying to refrain from impulse purchases.  I’ve found that I’m much  happier when I make purchases that are done with intention.  Plus, it leaves room for investment purchases.

9. I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

I couldn’t live without color and pattern in my home.  They go hand in hand for me.  I love playing with color and pattern combinations to see what works and what doesn’t.  While I love color and pattern, natural light comes in a close second for a must have in my home.  When we moved a few months ago, natural light was my absolute top priority.  I told my husband I wanted to wear sunglasses inside.  We came from a dark, narrow apartment and that turned me into a natural light obsessed person.  It makes for much better days now since I work from home.  Plus, it’s a must when I shoot for the blog.  Priorities, right?
photo: Chelsea Francis

10. A design don't:

Don’t incorporate pieces in your home if you don’t love them.  That old sofa that you hate?  Sell it and find one in your price range that you love.  (I promise they’re out there!)  That coffee table that was passed down from family but has no sentimental value?  Get rid of it!  Fill your home with pieces that you love and are meaningful to you.

11. What is your favorite spot in your home?

We moved into our home a few months ago and I decided I wanted to take the decorating process slow and room by room.  Easier said than done, for sure.  I started with our living room because we spend the most time in there.  I can almost say it’s finished, and it's definitely the most finished of all the rooms.  We just finished a bookcase project – Parker built it and I styled it.  I don’t know who loves it more.

12. What has been one of your biggest design challenges? (either your own home or a client space)

My biggest design challenge has been decorating around our rental. We did get to paint, but I dream at night about what more I wish I could do. I know that when we do finally buy a house that I’ll probably be eating my words. For now, my bank account and sanity are thanking me.

Isn't her home so fun and beautifully styled?! Her living rug = major love!! Thanks for being here, Claire!

Designer Files: Jana Bek

I'm thrilled to welcome Jana Bek, a talented interior designer also in the state of Michigan, to the blog today to learn more about her and her design style! Jana and I have been friends on Instagram for a while and we're hoping to meet up here in the future :) I know you'll love her style-- and I'm sure you've seen her amazing Brushstroke Lamps somewhere online or Instagram. I love how unique the designs of the lamps are and am hoping to get them in a client's space really soon! What a talented lady! Read on to learn all about Jana...

Jana Bek Design
Your Style in 3 Words: Sophisticated, Vibrant, Cheerful

1. What is one of your favorite projects you've done in your home?

Our breakfast nook – it was an eyesore for so long, we didn’t want to retile so I hesitated updating it. I finally took it on for my “One Room Challenge” (20 designers redesign a space in 6 weeks & blog about their experience). The short time forced me to dive in and now it is one of our favorite spots in the house!

2. How did you get into design?

I started in product development and fashion merchandising at Macy’s & Henri Bendel, I loved the experiences but not the fast cyclical nature of fashion. I transitioned to interiors as it offers more permanence of design – a well-designed space is one you can enjoy for years.

3. Stripes or plaid?
Stripes

4. Geometric or floral?
I’m a huge floral fan, but most spaces I design usually include florals and geometric patterns in the textile mix. Florals tend to dictate the personality and palette of the space then I layer in other patterns for interest.

5. Symmetry or asymmetry?
It really depends! Sometimes I like over the top symmetry, like this amazing entry by Amanda Lindroth. Other times I prefer balanced asymmetry like, in a bedroom, matching nightstands but with different lamps atop. It just depends the vibe myself or my client is after.

6. One decorating "rule of thumb" is:

Buy pillow inserts a size up (or overstuffed ones). So if you have a 20” pillow cover, buy a 22” insert – this makes your pillows look very full & will give you that luxurious look you are after.

7. I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

Art. Art really transforms a space and creates a mood, I’m a firm believer in investing in works you love – hold out for pieces you’ll love to look at I'm a huge fan of Natural Curiosities and Gray Malin.

8. A design don't:

Don’t design for others, for trends, etc. We live in Michigan, yet I’ve created a coastal inspired oasis for us – I think many would find this juxtaposition “wrong” but it makes us happy. Once you get caught up in design rules, you lose your own aesthetic; your home should be a reflection of your taste & lifestyle.

9. What is your favorite spot in your house?

Our master bedroom. It really feels like our own resort retreat, just a happy space to start the day and unwind with a cocktail in. Our master bath, on the other hand, is scary outdated but I’m delighted to share that I’m partnering with Kohler & Wayfair to make it over as we speak!

10. What has been one of your biggest design challenges-- either for your house or a client project?

It would be our great room. My husband designed the space with an interior designer before we met – he didn’t know what he liked then and every piece in the room was heavy and the colors mucky – bad green chenille sofa, brown jacquard chairs, and sad yellow walls. The quality of the furnishings was great though so I challenged myself to work with as many of the items as possible. Doing so, I was nervous it wouldn’t look transformed but I stuck with my vision and we are absolutely delighted with how it turned out. New pillows, reupholstering the chair cushions in white linen and fauna for days turned it into the light, bright, British Colonial/Havana hangout we were after.

Aren't her lamps awesome?! Shop all the colors here. I completely agree about the pillow rule! My client's are always a little hesitant when I tell them to buy a few inches larger, but it really makes SUCH a difference! Thanks for being here, Jana!

Designer Files: Hanging with the Hewitts

I'm excited to have one of my favorite style bloggers, Caycee from Hanging with the Hewitts here today! As a wife, mom, and all around stylish gal, she's dishing on her home, how she got into design and what she can't live without in her own house.

Enjoy!

1. You have small children, but you love design and keeping a beautiful home. How do you let your kids be kids, but also keep your home tidy, allowing it to be a place you truly love?

They have their spaces and mommy has hers :)  My kids know they can freely go into any room in our home whenever they choose, but they also know which rooms are not meant for running, coloring, and kickball.  I tried really hard to give them a space just for them, a place their imaginations could run wild, and honestly, in their playroom is where you will find them 90% of the time.  Carson is my neat and tidy child and always cleans up his mess, and Taylor....well, she has a long way to go before I can say that about her ;)

2. How did you get into design?

It has always been something I love, and the older I get the more I love it.  To be honest, I am not 100% when it really became an obsession of mine, but I am guessing when my husband and I bought our first home.

3. Stripes or plaid?

Stripes all the way!!

4. Geometric or floral?

Hmmm....can I please choose both?!? Because this one is a tie!

5. Symmetry or asymmetry?

Symmetry. I am way too OCD and type A.

6. One decorating "rule of thumb" is:

Always hang your drapes/curtains as high as you can.  It gives the illusion of a taller window and makes your space appear larger.

7. I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

Sunburst mirrors. I have them in four different rooms and I never get tired of seeing them.

8. A design don't:

Don't forget the details that make your space special and unique.  I love walking into someone's home and seeing personal little snippets.

9. What is your favorite spot in your home?

My daughters room. We are currently in the middle of re-designing it from nursery to big girl room, and I am already in LOVE!!

10. What has been one of your biggest design challenges?

Our master bedroom.  It is the most oddly shaped room I have ever seen!  It's extremely long but narrow. Furniture placement has been such a challenge in this space.

***
Thanks for sharing, Caycee! LOVE Taylor's room and I also adore sunburst mirrors. Don't you love her philosophy on design with kids in your home? I will remember that for one day down the road :) Go say hi to Caycee and get fashion and home inspiration from her here!

You can find all of the other posts in this series HERE.

Happy Tuesday!

Designer Files: Desiree Hartsock

A few weeks ago I mentioned I would be blogging for Desiree Hartsock in her "home" section of the blog every few weeks. Today I am over on her blog sharing tips for your next outdoor get-together! And guess what?! Desiree is here chatting with us all about her style! Learn how her passion for designing gowns came about, how she designed her own wedding dresses, and learn how her style translates into their home design. We share a passion for vintage details and both attended The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Let's get started...

1. When did your love for design begin?
My love for all things design started the second I could pick up a crayon. I would always draw, sketch and create things, but my love for fashion design began in high school when I would make dresses for my friends. My passion for bridal and wedding gown design really grew while attending FIDM.

2. You are a wedding dress designer. How does your creative process start when you design a new dress or collection? Where do you look to for inspiration?
I am always inspired by nature and the intricate beauty of vintage details, but the process of designing for me begins with the touch, look and feel of the fabrics chosen. I get inspired by the texture, drape, or color of the fabrics and from there the designs begin to come to life. As far as creating new collections and styles, I am often influenced by different cultures or shapes, while still keeping my natural and vintage inspiration as the foundation.

3. What has been one of your biggest design challenges?
TIME! I was doing custom bridal gowns prior to creating my collection with Maggie Sottero and it was difficult to manage the time needed, due to increasing obligations during that time. Being too busy also diminishes creativity, so I had to learn how to take time out for it all...the dresses, the obligations, and for myself to stay creative.

4. You designed your own wedding gowns, which were stunning! Was it harder to design and choose a gown for your own wedding?
It was actually quite opposite. I have worked in the bridal industry as a bridal consultant for many years and have seen almost any dress you could think of. For me, I just wanted to stay true to what I liked and create dresses that were different than what I have seen. I loved wearing them! ;)

5. A design don't:
Don't over emphasize all the assets. Leave an element of intrigue that flatters in the right areas.

6. Even though you're a wedding gown designer, we'd love to learn how that aspect of design translates into how you decorate your home. Do you prefer symmetry or asymmetry? Tell us a bit about your style.
I would say that I prefer symmetry. Just as I am inspired by nature for my designs, I am inspired by nature when decorating my home. Chris and I both love neutrals with soft grays, blues, and tans. I'm drawn to creating a soft look that is welcoming and also reminds me of living by the beach.

7. I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

Throw blankets. It's the best to cuddle up on the couch in warm blankets and watch a movie.

8. What is your favorite spot in your house?

My favorite spot is our bedroom! It's so cozy and comfortable. I also like the personal details that make the room even more special, like our wedding photos and a conch we brought back from Antigua where we got engaged.

***
I'm not sure about you, but her wedding gown with the gorgeous beaded back is exactly something I'd choose for myself (one day, one day!!) Desiree, want to design my wedding gown when the time comes?! ;) Their dark blue bedroom walls are a beautiful contrast with the white bedding. I think she's right-- personal details are that perfect finishing touch on a space!

Don't you just adore Desiree's gowns?!

Head on over to Desireehartsock.com to check out my guest post for her today.

Happy Thursday!

Designer Files: Sita Montgomery Interiors

I can't wait to share my friend, Sita, with you today as a part of my Designer Files series. Every other week, I love showing you the work of another talented designer. Sita is a wealth of knowledge on all things design! She's an interior designer, mom and blogger. Today we get to find out if she prefers symmetry or asymmetry, what she couldn't live without in her home, and how she manages to keep her home tidy and well-designed, even with three kiddos! Welcome Sita of Sita Montgomery Interiors.

1. What is one of your favorite home projects or pieces in your home?

I just finished designing my Master Bedroom and right now, it is definitely my most favorite room in my home. I kept the color palette very neutral and added some metallic elements to keep it interesting. The result is a restful retreat that also feels sophisticated and classic. My husband and I love spending time, relaxing in our bedroom.

2. How did you get into design?

I have always had a desire to make my surroundings beautiful. When I was 7 or 8 years old, I felt the closet doors in my bedroom were too plain and boring. Asked my mom to buy me some acrylic paint, which she did. I took the paint and painted a pattern at the top of my door that mimicked the color and pattern of the wallpaper border in my room. Yes, I said wallpaper border...it was the 80's after all! As an adult, that inherent need to transform my surroundings manifested itself in my own home. Friends and family started asking me to help them with their homes. What started out as a hobby soon became a full blown design business. I never take for granted that I get to make an occupation out of my passion. I consider it one of my greatest blessings.

3. Stripes or plaid?

It is so hard for me to choose! I love both so much, but you'll see more stripes in my design and fashion than you will plaid.

4. Geometric or floral?

Okay, I really can't choose between these two! Almost all of my designs incorporate both geometric and floral patterns. My personal design aesthetic tends to be a little more feminine, so the use of geometric and floral patterns together, help to give my designs a more gender neutral feel. My answer is geometric AND floral. :)

5. Symmetry or asymmetry?

This is an easy one for me. 100% symmetry. I have tried and tried to get out of my "symmetry box", but I just can't do it. I am hard wired to look for balance in a room and all of my room designs are driven by the need to create that balance. Don't get me wrong, I love asymmetry in design and some of my favorite designers are asymmetrical design geniuses, but I'm a symmetry girl all the way.

6. One decorating "rule of thumb" is:

My number one decorating rule of thumb is "Incorporate trends, but avoid being trendy." In our Pinterest and Instagram world, we are flooded with images of "trendy design". Chevron, anyone? It is so hard to see the all trends and not feel the need to fit them all into our homes. Right now, gold and brass is everywhere. If you want to incorporate that trend into your home, start with a gold foil pillow or a brass accent table. If you really, really love it, switch out some light fixtures, or pull the trigger on a brass framed coffee table, but unless your love affair with brass began long ago and has continued regardless of what the trends are in design, you might want to think twice about buying that gorgeous brass canopy bed. On the flip side, don't feel the need to incorporate all of the latest trends into your home. I absolutely love all the ways macrame is being used in interior design these days, but you will never find it in my home. It's one thing to step outside your comfort zone when it comes to design, but you never want to take the leap that leads you off the cliff! :)

7. I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

Natural light. One of my favorite things about my home is all the natural light that floods in, especially in the morning. We are fortunate enough to live in a home where we have no one living behind us. Our backyard borders protected wetlands, so we have giant mature trees in our yard. The back of our home has large picture windows that face east and let in a ton of light . They are all equipped with roman shades, but those shades never come down. I've found that natural light is a huge mood booster for me, it just makes me happy!

8. A design don't:

I think this goes back to my decorating "rule of thumb", but don't feel pressured to follow the trends. I believe so much of design is about how it feels. If it doesn't feel good to you, don't do it. Good interior design is an extension of the person the space belongs to and is timeless. Switching it up a little to incorporate new trends is always fun, but don't feel pressured to do so.

9. You have young kids. How do you keep a pretty, well-designed home with littles running around?

I get this question all the time and the truth is I don't know how to answer it. I'm going to say that 90% of it is luck. I had my two girls and then my son. My girls were never destructive or really busy. They weren't drawn to touch any of the accessories I had placed out and they have always been good about keeping the food in the kitchen. My son is definitely more rambunctious. When he was very young, he was more inclined to touch things, pull on drapes, etc. Luckily, he grew out of that very quickly. Having the examples of his two older sisters has helped tremendously. I think part of it is that our homes have always been designed. My kids have grown up in a designed environment. When we were newly married and had very young kids, everything was done on a modest budget and I kept in mind that whatever I put in my home had to be child friendly. We had leather ottomans and velvet microfiber sofas. It wasn't until we moved into our current home almost 3 years ago, that we started to really invest in the interior design of our home. My children are still young, but old enough that they know how their father and I expect them to show respect for not just the people in our home, but the things as well. That being said, our basement is filled with furniture we have had for years, coupled with newer pieces from places like HomeGoods and Target. They can let loose down there and be kids. I think it is important to have a balance.

10. What has been one of your biggest design challenges?

Truthfully, designing my own home has been my biggest design challenge. I have a need to have every space in my home be "done", but like many others, I have a budget that hasn't allowed for that. It is hard for me to see spaces in my home that don't look quite like I would like them too, but I know that, in time, I will be able to actualize the vision I have for them. One of the sayings I try and live by is "All things in moderation." My father used that phrase constantly when I was growing up and now as an adult, it has become a mantra for me. And so it is, even when it comes to Interior Design.

***

I love her decorating rule of thumb. So important to remember to stick to classic elements when decorating our own spaces, and not feel like we have to incorporate all of the trends.

Designer Files: Wicks Nest

I'm excited because today is the second edition of my new series, Designer Files! In this series, I will ask some of my favorite designers and other artists some fun questions for us to get to know them better. You'll want to keep reading and meet Kristy of Wicks Nest, because this new friend of mine has one of the most beautifully designed and lived-in homes. Her house is gorgeous, comfortable and inviting.

What is one of your favorite home projects or pieces in your home?

My favorite home piece and project most certainly has to be my large white mirror that hangs in the Hallway. I found it tucked away in a consignment store. It was originally black and gold without a mirror. I saw the potential, grabbed it for almost nothing then painted it and had a mirror placed inside. I love how it opens up my home... The wall it hangs on allows you to see 3 different spaces which makes my home feel larger and more open.

How did you get into design?

I've been into design my whole life without realizing it. It all started with my Mom. She always set an example with everything she touched. Whether it be the several homes she has built and decorated from start to finish all on her own, her Master Gardening skills and floral arranging talents or even her knowledge of entertaining and cooking (she often held dinner parties for generals and important political figures)... she has introduced a broad spectrum of talents from which I have learned a great deal. Everything from paint color to decor pieces has a special meaning or purpose in my Mom's home. I love that. She has in turn influenced everything my sister and I do when designing, decorating and entertaining. Having lived in Greece, Washington DC, Santa Barbara and Sante Fe we have learned to respect a wider grasp of styles and an appreciation for different cultures.

Stripes or plaid?

Stripes. I love the clean look of stripes mixed with Floral.

Geometric or floral?

Floral because I have to have a little 'natural' beauty in every space whether it be through real flowers, fabric patterns or art.

Symmetry or asymmetry?

Symmetry always!

One decorating "rule of thumb" is:

Never hang art work too high! Art needs to have a sense of belonging in a space not float high on a wall. Eye level is usually a good way to gauge this. (depending how tall the person is) If you're unsure, hang on the lower side. :)

I couldn't live without _____ in my home.

My ottoman. We love having somewhere to place our feet that is large and comfortable but can also act as a coffee table when used with a tray centered in the middle. My ottoman provides another way to introduce texture and beauty. I love that my ottoman is leather so it never gets dirty but I am able to constantly change the look and feel of the room by the design and color of a throw placed on top. One more element I always like to add is a Tray. It provides the same added benefits as a throw but it also gives us a place to put our drink.. Both provide a way to add color and style depending on the season.

A design don't:

I have 2 that drive me bananas...

~Don't use an area rug that is too small! Often times people buy rugs that are tiny in comparison to their seating area. I really feel it's important that if you can't fit all of your furniture on a rug, the front legs of larger pieces need to sit half way on the rug. When a rug is placed in front of furniture it tends to look like a postage stamp. ;)
~Don't have too much clutter or too many knick knacks. I love rooms that are uncluttered with pieces that accent the space but don't overwhelm it.

What is your favorite spot in your home?

My family room is my favorite room as I consider it to be the heart of our home. I love that it's a wide open space yet still feels cozy. My family room also spills into my kitchen and that is where you will always find my family and friends gathering.

What has been one of your biggest design challenges?

My biggest challenge by far has been designing my small, narrow backyard. Almost all of my interior windows face the back yard garden so it was important I get the view just right. I needed light and I knew grass wasn't an option so I added a pool to soften the hardscape and offer reflected light. I also included a built in fire pit with recycle glass for added interest and texture. The materials used in my landscape design are glass tiles (which can be found on the pool wall and columns), a stamped concrete patio surface, a long travertine retaining wall and last but not least a beautiful large painted wooden Arbor which sits in the corner softened by climbing roses. I love that the retaining wall allows me the garden space I crave for my flower and garden obsession. I knew it was important for my exterior space to mirror my interior in style and color and I'm thrilled with the outcome.

Amen to the don't hang art too high and don't get too small of an area rug!! I also love that Kristy's love for design stemmed from her mom! Isn't her home lovely?!
