Long Distance Relationships + Cottage Hill

I'm so thrilled to introduce you to a new wedding and lifestyle magazine, Cottage Hill. If you haven't heard, Cottage Hill celebrates lives worthy of an elegant and meaningful legacy. It’s a place where marriage is more important than color palettes, authentic work and influence is more important than popularity and living a rich life serving others is the most elegant lifestyle of all. Friends, I totally believe in this mission. If you do as well, you can join me in being a part of the Kickstarter campaign to raise money to support this beautiful magazine's Homecoming Issue!

That's why I'm honored to be one of the first little features on the Cottage Hill blog today! As you know, my boyfriend and I started off our relationship being long distance, so Katie, the editor of Cottage Hill Magazine, asked me to share a bit about our story and shed some light on the tough, but rewarding dating scenario that long distance is. I love this guy with all my heart, and I hope this piece on long distance inspires and encourages. My hope is that through our love story, more couples will say "I can do that". There's nothing greater than God placing such a great person in your life when you least expect it.

Head on over and read our story. And please do share yours in the comments today! How did you meet your significant other?! :)

Have a wonderful day!

  1. Oh Michaela, I just loved that post about the two of you!!! The pictures are beyond gorgeous and I am SO very happy for you that you found such an amazing man to share life with! What a true blessing! You two are quite the stunning pair! Thanks for sharing more of your love story, loved it!

  2. What a beautiful post. I am so happy for the both of you. Katie is in a long distance relationship now, and I am sure would agree with you on all accounts.
And, you just never know when you will meet that special someone. I had quit nursing school, and my dad got me a job at the insurance company he worked for...who knew that 3 months later, the man I have now been married to for 26 years would walk in the door for an interview. God closed one chapter, but He opened a much bigger one.

  3. Such amazing pictures of the two of you! Your love story is just unfolding and it's beautiful to read. I love reading about how people met...

My husband and I also did long distance. We met at work a couple of years before we started dating. We dated for a year before he moved 1800 miles away to work. But this was the age before all the technology you have! We talked on the phone daily - long distance phone bills were $$$. We worked for the same company for part of that time, so email worked well for that. And we would have a visit in person once/month for a long weekend. Our long distance relationship was 2 years before we decided that I would move to him. I am grateful for the long distance, since I really do think it helped us have a strong foundation. We have been married now almost 11 years, moved back "home," and have 2 wonderful children.

  4. I love your story, how beautiful is our Creator? This is such a sweet & rare relationship you guys share. It really shows that when you put your trust in the Lord, He works for the good of those that love Him. I am encouraged to hear there are still men out there that seek the Lord.

I met my (now) husband when I was 18, after my freshman year of college. Sean and I met at the golf course. He saw me from afar, and approached me at the lunch table and asked to sit down with me (I was alone). To my surprise, we hit it off, played a round of golf and parted ways. He called me later to ask me on a date. I knew this man melted my heart by the 3rd date and I knew this was who God had for me. We dated 1 year in Raleigh, being together all of the time. We then decided to try the long distance thing while he took off to Atlanta for grad school. We trusted the Lord, we grew together and based the foundation of our relationship off trust and communication. Two years later, we married in 2012 and were residing back in Raleigh, NC.

    Isn't love grand?! We love because He first loved us {1 John 4:9}

  5. WHO did your photos? They are so good! Oh wait... it was meeeee. They are awesome because you and Mccann are freaking MODELS. Love you both!

  6. I'm in a long distance relationship right now, and can totally relate to all of this! I'm so glad you and your man are now in the same place, able to kick off that new season. :) Excited for when me and my man are there, too!

  8. I love that piece you wrote! My boyfriend and I started dating in high school and six years later we are still together. We dated long distance throughout college and are still long distance now as we take on graduate school (though we went from 6 hours apart to 4 hours!) I love the list you wrote at the end and the HGTV part made me giggle. TOTALLY something my boyfriend and I would do :) Thanks for sharing this!

  9. I love your post! How sweet! It always makes me happy when long distance works out so nicely :)

My boyfriend and I met through the company that he owns, and what started as emails, turned into texts, and then into calls and Skype. I was super fortunate that he only lived five hours away, because I could make the majority of the drive after work, and he would pick me up and do the rest of the driving. After six months, he made the decision to move to the town where I work! I have been so blessed to have him here with me, and we now see each other every day. Such a nice change!

  10. This post was so sweet and really resonated with me. Michaela, you and McCann are seriously so cute together, and your story is adorable as well! Skype is a Godsend and one day I would love to write to the company to thank them for what their technology has done for my life.

I met my boyfriend in middle school, but we didn't start dating until high school. He came to my 17th birthday party and it was like something within our friendship to that point just clicked and I suddenly realize how much I liked him. (I say God just has mysterious timing! ;) We have been together ever since (7 years this October!), and have spent more time long-distance than together. He is in the military so we have been through many, many small deployments and missions, plus a year-long deployment to Afghanistan. Although deployment was so scary and quite literally the hardest thing we have ever been through, I am so glad we have experienced it. For during those 12 long months, I have never been so sure of God's grace. I could probably write a novel about the trials of long distance (and being a military SO!), but I will sum it up as exactly how you described it Michaela! Absence absolutely makes the heart grow fonder, and the time and distance just makes the homecomings so much sweeter. :) My boyfriend is now home for good and I couldn't feel more blessed. I am so happy for you that you have been able to achieve the same!

Thank you for stopping by! If you have a specific question, please email me at I always reply to emails! Have a blessed day! xoxo
