"Daddy! DAD! Hello? It's intermission now. Now, I said. Watch the half time show. Dad, I'm over HERE!"
Of course I was the half time show.
When I was little I loved to sing. I still do, but I'm actually under control now. By that I mean, I don't even know how I breathed in and out all day long, because my windpipes were so busy singing.
I was always the little diva of the family; performing half time shows and Christmas plays. In every home video I've ever seen, whether I was supposed to be in it or not, I would interrupt the main action with a song.
There was no way my parents were getting me a karaoke machine at age 4, because of the obvious implications that would have on their ear drums. So my amazingly handy, creative, and best-daddy-ever made me a microphone and stand out of PVC pipes. Appropriately, he spray painted it purple. I distinctly remember talking louder if the mic was up to my mouth, just to try to convince my audience the microphone was real. Also, the hearth was my stage. Duh.
{I rocked that Minnie Mouse night gown} |
It was my favorite toy.
Then, my world came crashing down, just yesterday actually. We learned in my sustainability class that PVC is one of the most toxic plastics on the market.
OOPS.
{Here's the design part of the post!}
The problem is that it's in almost everything! Upholstery, construction, glues, flooring {especially vinyl, the worst offender of them all}, and roofing. It's used because it's cheap, durable and it's what has been used forever. I'm here to warn you against the harmful implications of it, though! There is good news, ladies! They do make some eco-friendly glues and sustainable alternatives. So be on the look out for those (:
I still love my microphone stand though, Daddy. You are my hero.
Love and Microphones,
I love that you LOVE your Daddy. And always have. And you have a gift at blending life, love and your interior design together!
ReplyDeleteGreat Post! I think I might have actually had that same night-down when I was a kid... well the style anyways, except it was Barbie and the Rockers ha!
ReplyDeleteFor the past year my Hubby and I have been taking major steps as far as becoming more eco-friendly in all aspects [energy, recycling and other household stuff]. Toxic plastics are just scary! This Summer we are going to be replacing and working on a lot of the pipes under the house and instead of using PVC we are going to use PEX tubing, and from what I have read thus far, it's a better choice as far as being eco-friendly, than using PVC. Can't wait! :)
Happy Tuesday!
that is the cutest thing i've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteI used to do the same thing during football games, except I was a cheerleader! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to do the same thing to my parents, but for me it was dance routines! lol
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Very informative!

Too cute! Our oldest had that same nightgown and danced to Disney's Main Street video all the while twirling her umbrella!! LOL Good to know about the PVC though.
ReplyDeleteThat is just adorable! I love that your dad went to the effort to give you a "real" karaoke machine! TOo bad about the PVC dangers though!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a heart felt post!! You are adorable.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! Little girls with bobbs steal my heart. What a loving Father.
ReplyDeleteSo I guess that wine rack I was going to make out PVC is out of the question? ;)
So funny, I use to put singing concerts on for my parents all the time. Then that is what my sister & I did, even would set up a stage and put a line up of songs for each of us. I love it! lol.
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh, you are SO adorable!! I used to have a nightgown just like that! We were twinkies!! Your daddy is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable memory! Me and my sister made up our own band with two neighbor girls and would choreograph dance routines and everything. Oh yeah. We were major. (c: You have an awfully sweet Daddy, too!
ReplyDeleteHow are you so adorable?! Amazing, just amazing! xo
ReplyDeletethat was the most creative way to talk about PVC ever.
ReplyDeletewhat a cute post!! love it! : )
ReplyDeletemajor cuteness. you were such an adorable little girl!!
ReplyDeleteBelieve me I wasn't intentionally poisoning you. Nor was the cottage cheese asbestos covered ceiling in your bedroom meant to harm you...
ReplyDeleteLet me know what a safe alternative material is and I'll make you another Microphone stand.
Love and Child Abuse,
Dad
Love the picture!! I have some hilarious ones of my sister and I singing into our microphones too - I need to look for those ha! :) And thanks for the warning about PVC!
ReplyDeletewhat a sweet daddy you have. love the picture!
ReplyDeleteDesign tip: Microphone = toilet paper roll, racket ball, clear packing tape. Leave end of toilet paper roll open so it slips over micro phone stand, but can be easily removed for getting closer to the fans or busting out some sick dance moves while singing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. I didn't know that, and you're right, it is used EVERYWHERE!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that microphone! Nicely done :)
I love this post--I had a mike of my own back in the day. I have some HILARIOUS videos of me dancing and singing to my dad on camera...and my dad = my hero too! Hope you're having a great week, my dear! xoxo {av}

ReplyDeleteI knew we were kindred spirits! When I was 3 I had a tug-of-war ON STAGE with two other kids over the mic during our Christmas pageant. Diva? Oh, yes! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou were such a cutie!
