Last week I did a guest post over at My (Newly)Wed Life for Ana. I shared tips on how to decorate your first home; whether it be a rental home, small home, or any combo of those! I also did an inspiration board for her living room, as her and her hubby are in the process of redoing it. So exciting to help! Here's what she told me about their style:
They love neutrals, geometric patterns, a combination of modern/contemporary with a touch of traditional, pops of red, simplicity and no clutter. She gave me the picture of the red chair and said she'd love to incorporate it. Ana also let me know they wanted a smaller couch and two side chairs and/or recliners. Here's what I've come up with:
I gave them a neutral sofa and side chair from West Elm, the red chair they asked for, a simple, clean-lined leather ottoman, a tall thick-framed stand up mirror {also West Elm}, vertical floating shelving, a contemporary tripod floor lamp, a funky shag rug, and some modern subway art.
Some fun modern touches seen in the art work, rug, mirrors and vertical shelving will really encompass their style without feeling too minimalist. It's still a comfy cozy room with style! I popped the neutrals with the red they loved and a small accent of turquoise. I'm loving that duo...what about you? To deal with the clutter, a simple storage solution would be a bookcase with baskets or boxes to tuck everything away in.
Feeling crafty and want to make your own subway art? It's easy! My girl Courtney did one of her own over here.
Here are some other awesome rooms I've found that incorporate pops of red into a neutral room:

ReplyDeleteDefinitely YAY!
ReplyDeleteYou have excellent taste! I'm struggling with gathering ideas to decorate our new place, but one thing I've settled on is having neutral walls & big pieces with bold accents...it's such a classic look and easy to switch up.
ReplyDeleteyay for sure!!!

I don't want to do an E-design with you. I want you to come here for approx 1 month and live in my house and design it. Thanks, bye.

ReplyDeletei love that lenox room thing!!
ReplyDeleteGirl you are all over the place these days :) I love seeing your fabulous self on all these different blogs. And that room with the fireplace and the red wall fixtures with the mirror in between is amazing. One day I'll have a room like that. One day! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteMoving later this summer and we have (HAVE) to paint the living room/dining room. Wood floors and trim (but kind of dull). We're just renting so we won't be restaining/redoing the wood but will definitely paint. My furniture is all beige and the couch my boyfriend has is a light brown. We have some brown/black stands/tables and black picture frames (a ton)
I was leaning towards a bright color for the walls since everything is so neutral, but ivory/cream/beige might be a good clean start. We can always add color with certain art pieces, pillows or rugs. We'll see, definitely work in progress.
I LOVE the pops of red. How is that you are so young, gorgeous AND talented? Some people just have all the luck... :)
ReplyDeleteGreat uses of red!! Fun yet not too aggressive!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind red, but there can be too muc of it. I like when accessories are red and not furniture. It's one of those colors that isn't my favorite, so it would need to be done right.
ReplyDeleteI am still sitting here thinking and loving that gorgeous bathroom with the red striped rug. These rooms have just the right amount of the crimson beauty (c:
ReplyDeleteP.S. Loved your guest post, my dear!
Loving those bold pillows and that floor lamp! Nice color palette too!
ReplyDeleteI love adding in pops of any color.. just found your blog...

Okay Michaela I absolutely LOVE this post. I have always been obsessed with the color Red. I have a red car, red pants, red shoes, a red couch, red appliances in my kitchen...anyway you get the point. But lately I have been thinking that I would enjoy the red so MUCH MORE if it stood out a little more. So I think slowly but surely I will get rid of the BIG RED items in my house and use them to add a POP of color! oh how exciting!
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing! I love all the pops of color. I need to hurry up and send you pics of the apartment so you can jazz it up :)
