Our Living Room Game Plan

A funny thing happens when you move back home to your parents house after college, and posses a degree in interior design. Can you guess?! Your parents recruit you to redo their home. Over the years I was in college, they've graciously allowed me to use their house as my experimental canvas, and now we're ready to pull it all together and make it look like a brand new place, just by changing a few key things. I'm calling this #operationmakeovermyparentshouse

The living room design plan is above. Currently there's a floral sofa (that my mom chose 13 years ago, in her defense.) We just purchased a new sofa on Monday. It's not quite like the one in the picture, but I couldn't find an image online. You'll have to wait and see what it looks like when it arrives in 5 weeks! (Ohhh, the suspense!) It's dark gray, and I'm loving it!  The walls will be Malibu Beige at 75%. We really love the color, so we're doing most of our home this color, with the exception of my room, the master bedroom, my brother's room and the new bathroom. It's getting painted next week, so we're extremely excited. I'll definitely be back with updates on the color.

The REALLY exciting part is that one wall in our dining room walls will be this amazingly beautiful Phillip Jeffries diamond wallpaper. This will serve as the focal point of the room and other details in the living room will accent the silver/blue hue in the textured paper. Our other colors will be navy and cranberry. Should be a beautiful new look.

Client Update: Colorful Apartment

A few months ago I showed you a client's e-design I had been working on and it was so fun to hear your feedback! Kristina, my adorable client, is a college senior at my alma mater, Seattle Pacific University. I was thrilled to help her with her first apartment, so you can imagine my excitement when I received a few sneak peek progress photos of the design. It's coming along quite nicely I must say. To refresh your memory, here was the living room design:

My crafty client found this dresser and gave it a fresh coat of paint, then hung the mirror above it, as seen in my design. I think it creates the perfect entryway.  Now here's the bedroom and bathroom design:

I just can't get over these adorable polka dots for the wall. TOO CUTE. And especially perfect for a college apartment that you can't paint. How's that for some renters/apartment dwellers decorating?! I love every ounce.  The living room is going to be equally as adorable, as Kristina just put together a great entertainment center on the TV wall. I can't wait to show you more! Client Reveal: Cobalt & White Dining Room

It's always fun to receive pictures from e-design clients of their finished spaces. If you remember back a a year, I showed off this adorable chic library, done by one of my favorite online clients, Carolyn. A few weeks ago, she sent me pictures from her finished dining room. After her library/living room area, we worked on a design plan to revamp her dining and family room. Here was the design plan I thought up {before I had photoshop!}:

Carolyn has a great sense of style, so I knew she'd execute the design well, but these images blew me away. I think it turned out SO lovely! Just so you can get a feel for what we started with, here was the before:

And the after:

I think she did a great job, don't you?! That blue rug does wonders for the dining room; completely opening it up, drawing the eye to the pattern and providing a great palette. The cobalt blue contrasts beautifully with the crisp white chairs. The ikat artwork on the wall above the buffet is my favorite part. I think it brings just the right amount of color.

A Playful Kid's Room Design Plan + Artwork

One of my best friends and her husband are adopting 2 or 3 children from Ethiopia very soon! It's been such an amazing {and trying} experience to watch, and I'm so grateful to have been included in the process along the way.  They already have two children, whom I adore like my own, so adding more to the family will be such a joyous time. As adoption goes, they are unsure of how many children, what gender they will be, and when these sweet kiddos will be coming home, so the design for their new room is on stand by until we get more details.  

However, one thing is for sure! When I laid eyes on these STUNNING watercolor prints by Laura Dro Designs, I knew they had to be in the room.  What could be more perfect than a set of colorful, safari animals for wall decor?! I went over to Kate's house the other day to snap a picture of the prints in the room.  The walls will stay this light blue, the prints will be framed in white frames and hung above the dresser, and we'll be adding some key pieces to the space as they get closer to bringing home their kids. For now, this is the general design direction: simple and practical, playful and colorful.

Colorful Client Living Room

Thanks for all your kind comments about our vacation photos on yesterday's post! I've been learning a lot about my camera lately, so maybe I should do a little photography post soon??

Today I'm sharing a recent client e-design with you. Helping people all over the world create spaces they love has been so fun over the past few years. When I received an email from a bubbly young girl who was moving into her first apartment, I was so excited to help her design the space. When I found out she goes to Seattle Pacific University {my alma mater!} I was even more thrilled.  We set out to dream up a colorful, functional and sophisticated space for Kristina to live and work, as well as host friends.  If there's one thing I know about Seattle, it's that you need a burst of color in your decor to balance out all the gray in the sky. I think we did just that!  This lucky girl is moving into a really cute one bedroom apartment, with an open concept living room and kitchen.  We're putting finishing touches on the rest of the apartment, but today I'm dishing on the living room. Here it is:

My client already had this Crate & Barrel sofa, so we embellished with some fun and colorful throw pillows, a funky accent chair, colorful draperies, and a perfectly balanced gallery wall.  The entry will have a refinished piece of furniture like the one shown, but Kristina is going to find the console/dresser at a consignment store and fix it up herself. I love a girl who wants to get down and DIY :)

Client Room: Help Us Choose!

If I've ever worked with a "dream" client, it's Kate. This nursery design marks the third room I've helped her transform and it's nothing short of a complete joy to do for her. Kate lives in Australia, so that has presented some shopping/sourcing challenges! After doing three rooms for her, though, I'm now very familiar with some great sites Australia has to offer. Her American shipping address comes in handy, too!

After finding out she was pregnant, Kate emailed me with the exciting news and we got started right away. We're going for something neutral, sophisticated, with a dash of playful. They don't know the gender quite yet (but are finding out soon!) so this is just the basic plan. We will embellish with more gender specific accessories, art and bedding once she finds out if it's a little man or sweet little girl!

For now, we need your help! Kate and I love both the above designs, but she can't decide on a few things so I told her I'll have my readers help her out :) Here are the questions:

{Client Room} Megan's Nursery Reveal

Remember a few months ago when I created this girly nursery design for my BFF Megan? When Meg found out she was having a girl, there was no question what the nursery theme would be: girly, pink, dainty, cutesy, and ...did I mention pink?!  I think we accomplished just that.  After I thought up the inspiration board above, Megan did some treasure hunting of her own and found some adorable prints and details for the room on etsy, which I'm a huge fan of. I love how she took the design and adapted it along the way.  It was so fun to help Megan with precious Emory's nursery, and even the 100 texts a day asking if I liked something for the room were such a joy! I'm beyond excited for Meg and her husband, so Emory's cute and gray, pink and navy nursery is the cherry on top to a very exciting time in their lives!

{Before & After} Modern & Cozy Living Room

A few weeks ago I gave you a small taste of my sweet client {and blogger} Jill's new living room. After working on her e-design last November, all the furniture has been purchased, curtains have been hung, and gallery wall has been put together! Want to see the results?!

How sweet is that last photo?! Melt my heart.


What we did: In order to lighten up the room {and distract from the dark sectional}, I chose to paint the room a soft gray and dress up the windows with some great printed curtains. Subtle, but with just enough pattern.  Next, we needed to create a separate dining and office area- all in this little space! We did this in the two little nooks of the room and tried to designate the areas into two distinct zones.  Fun throw pillows and some beautiful wedding photos hung together in a gallery wall topped off the living room.

I'm so thrilled with how the room turned out! Jill was a joy to work with and she was a master design-executor.  We were lucky enough to have a fabulous photographer in the area to capture Jill's hard work. Thank you to Deanna Di Marzio for photographing the room!
