Day to Night Hair Tutorial: Half Up Twist + Casual Bun

Doing my hair and coming up with new styles has always been fun for me. When you have tons of hair like me (and I mean TONS) you have to get creative. I called in one of my friends and talented hairstylists, Hailey, to help me out and show all of us some easy styles. Katie came over and photographed it for us (she is amazing, too!) The first one is a day-to-night look. I know I'm late to the sock bun trend, but just in case some of you are also just joining in, here is a super easy, step-by-step tutorial for you.  I have never been shown how to do it before...but it's so easy and cute!

I want to go over my hair care routine and favorite products quickly before we dive in:

- Shampoo: I love Aveda products, as you will be able to tell from the rest of this list ;) I use Smooth Infusion mostly, but sometimes switch to PureOlogy, which I also love.

- Conditioner: Smooth Infusion is my go-to, once again!

- After my hair has dried in my towel for a few minutes, I take it out and immediately spray Damage Control on to it. It acts as a detangler, heat protection, and sun damage. It's awesome.

- This brush is my all-time-favorite! Will hair as thick as can be, I need a good brush that doesn't rip through my hair and give me damaged ends. This one is perfection. Trust me :)

- Before I blow dry my hair and after I have brushed it out, I put 1 pump of style prep smooth infusion in my hands and run throughout my hair. This helps cut down on the frizz, and gives it a smooth finish.

- After I blow dry my hair, I pour about 4 drops of this Dry Remedy oil in my hand and smooth it over the ends of my hair. It smells amazing and protects again heat, keeping my ends nice and pretty.

- I always finish with my favorite hairspray.

Let's do the "Day" look first!

You'll need: Redken Push Powder (the stuff that gives your hair volume!), curling iron, hairspray, bobby pins, comb, rubber band.

Step 1: Begin with loose curls for texture. Lift roots and pour a little bit of the push powder on the scalp. Rub it around with your fingertips. You will literally feel the volume, because your hair will start feeling thick and almost as if you've backcombed or "teased" it.

Step 2: Start combing the top part of your hair straight back, with no part. Then take the side sections back. Give it a little volume by rubbing the Push Powder around to tease it more. You want to grab hair from just above the ears and pull that whole section back.

Step 3: Twist the hair together and push up a bit to give it volume. Pin the bobby pins in a criss-cross form so they stay in place.

Now for the "Night" look:

Step 1: Leave your twisted half updo in place. This is the base of your sock bun!

Step 2: Cut the end of a sock off. I used a longer sock and it seemed to be perfect. Then roll the sock inside itself to create a donut shaped circle with the sock.

Step 3: Tie your hair in a high ponytail.

Step 4: Put the donut sock around the end of your ponytail. Begin to roll the sock down the ponytail, and while you do this, continue twisting the ponytail hair around the sock to ensure it's covered. Once you reach your head and there's nowhere left to roll, stop! Pin some loose hairs into place to help secure everything.

Step 5: Lastly, just pull some pieces down by your ears to give it the casual look. Hairspray and you're done!

Tell me, have you tried a sock bun? I think I only like them if they're on the small side like mine is, and looks effortless. I don't love when they are way too tight and precise. What about you?!

Have a lovely day!

8 Stylish Storage Solutions

If you read my post on how to maintain a clean and organized home you love from last week, then you'll know that storage bins and baskets are your friend when you are trying to declutter. These storage solutions conceal items, giving everything a place. I have a few baskets in my house: this one for my entry where I throw all my snow gear when I walk in, one told hold my yoga mat and weights, and another for my hamper. I always give clients baskets for shelves, their entry console and other areas, just to be sure they are going to be able to stay organized and love their home for years to come.

Above are 8 stylish storage solutions (in all price ranges!) I absolutely love the printed pattern #2 has. What a fun basket for a child's room or office space. For a more rustic and casual look, go with an inexpensive crate to hide the clutter.

What do you use to keep your home put together?!

Happy Wednesday! Come back tomorrow for a fun hair tutorial.

Updates Around My Apartment

It's been a little while since I've shown you an update of things around my apartment, so I thought I'd do that today! I just got these plants for either side of my TV. I felt like the gallery wall's asymmetry needed to be balanced out with something symmetrical, and these plants were the perfect thing!

I try to change out my chalkboard saying every few weeks. This week I'm reminding myself of grace! My chalkboard is found here.

I found a vintage desk last week for a great price. I'm obsessed with it! My little office space is coming together!!

Fresh flowers by Spring Sweet are always a reason to smile. If you happened to catch our little segment on Fox Channel 17 news last Friday, then you would have seen these blooms on the show! We had so much fun chatting about the Bloom Workshop. You can watch the clip here

I'm starting to read Bread and Wine. I love it so far! My purple huckleberry candle is my favorite smell ever!

My gold pouf is one of my very favorite things in my apartment. Every house could use a pouf! :)

Some fresh tulips for the dresser in my bedroom makes my room feel so happy-- even in the midst of some seriously cold weather.

That's what's new in these parts! Have you made any new changes in your home?

Happy Tuesday!

On My Desk: West Michigan Client Living Room Design

Happy Monday, all! How were your weekends? I spent the weekend away at a winter retreat with our youth group. It was a ball of fun (and super cold!)

This past week I've been working hard on pulling together details for a few client's homes. I just love the way one of my client's living room's is coming together, so I wanted to share it with you! We are doing the entire bottom floor of Angela's house, but the living room is becoming my favorite (okay, and the entry way, too!)

One of the first things I do after meeting with a client to hear about their space and the direction they want to go, is create an inspiration board with pieces I think will work well in the room. These are always just the foundation items (like a couch, table, etc.) This is a starting point for both me and my client, as I show it to them and let them give me feedback. Right after I emailed this inspiration board to Angela, she replied with "I love everything!" That's a pretty good starting point ;)

While construction on the house continues, we have been ordering pieces for the living room and it's making some good progress! The above couch came last week and it is so gorgeous, I can't wait to show it to you in a picture. The nailhead trim makes it look high-end and gives it that special detail. I also can't wait to throw some custom designer pillows on it, sewed by my grandma. Our pillow cover business, Lilac & Grace, is so fun to run together. I love that each of my clients get a custom look on their sofa.

Once some of the other major items come in, we will start accessorizing with pieces that offer a bit more color to spice it up. The pillows will be in the blues, turquoises, and gold palette. Here are some other accessories we will be adding:

I can't wait to show you more as the space comes together.

If you are looking for design help with your home, I'd love to step in. Whether you're looking for an hour consultation to help start the ideas flowing with a second pair of eyes, you are far away and want virtual design services, or you're in the West Michigan area and want in-home design services, I've got you covered. If you're interested in where some of the above pieces are from, I'm happy to help you get them ordered. I'm currently running a winter discounted special, so email me at for more information!

Have a wonderful week!
