Blooms for the Home: Farmer's Market Arrangement

Well, by now you know all my secrets for floral arranging, but I couldn't help but share this pretty bunch I picked up at the farmer's market last week. I don't buy a lot of flowers every week, but couldn't resist these pretty Dahlias and Hydrangea! I got them all for $9! I couldn't believe it.

Recipe: Hydrangea, Dahlia, Veronica.

1. Tape off your vessel/vase into quadrants. This helps support the stems! Clean your stems (take all foliage and leaves off below the water line.)

2. I placed my Hydrangea first.

3. Add in your Dahlias next, and position them in different quadrants.

3. Place the Veronica in between, to fill in any holes. These draping, long blooms make the bouquet feel a little bit whimsical!

Viola!

Bouquet Recipe: Pretty Peonies

This past week was SO gloomy here in Michigan (thanks for all your awesome comments on this post about the Midwest. I LOVED reading them all!), I decided to get me some pretty blooms for my apartment. Here's my latest bouquet recipe:

- 3 peonies (get them at Costco and Whole Foods while they last!!)

- 1 bunch of spray roses

- 2 snap dragons

- 1 bunch of alstroemeria

1. Make a criss-cross pattern with the alstroemeria. This will be your foundation to stick the peonies in next. 

2. Stand your peonies up in the criss cross weave, created with the green and white alstroemeria. 

3. Add in your spray roses to fill in holes. 
4. Poke in your two snap dragons to add some height!

5. Viola!

I love how the bouquet turned out. You'll be seeing a lot more of it soon for a video Ashley and I filmed for Bloom Workshop last week :) 

Can I just take a second to say my photos are all washed out in Blogger now!!! I'm so sad (and sorry!) because they were so much more vibrant before I loaded them into this post. Does anyone know what to do to fix this?! Help a sista out ;)

At Home Spring Flower Bouquet

A few weeks ago I went to the flower market with a client and, of course, couldn't help but pick up a few of my favorites flowers for our house. I grabbed the pink peonies, lavender sweat peas, and white anemones. While checking out, I always ask the worker if they're going to be throwing out any flowers I could perhaps take off their hands at a discount or for free ;) He said yes, I could have these gorgeous tulips! Are you kidding me?! These were perfectly healthy tulips, nowhere near the end of their lives, and I scored them for free. Always remember to ask about that!

I came home and made a simple floral arrangement for our dining room. 
Step one, find a pretty vase or vessel. I love this honeycomb vase. {Also, side note, I think we're going to be seeing the honeycomb pattern make a BIG appearance this next year, especially in wedding design.}

Step two: start with the tulips...

Step three: add sweet peas...

Step four: add the peonies.  I did two open buds on the right side, and one closed bud on the left. 

Step five: place the anemones to fill in the holes….

I had a few flowers left over, so I made a smaller arrangement for my room as well. In this one, I cut some Jasmine off our bush in our front yard, and holy wow. This combination of flowers smells like Hawaii bottled up in a jar, mixed with a little slice of Heaven :)

I can't wait for peony season, so all the local markets/grocery stores will carry them! Do you adore this sweet and girly flower combination as much as I do?! I think they're just perfect for the Spring weather we've been having here in California.

DIY Fall Flower Arrangement

I'm such a fan of flowers; you all know that by now :) My mom has always kept fresh flowers in the house and I just love it. Now while I would love to go to the flower mart and bring home exotic, gorgeous flowers to make my own arrangements each week, that's just not going to happen. We usually pick up a bouquet of flowers at Trader Joe's, so when we get home, I take the arrangements apart and figure out how to make it look better :)  I'm going to show you how to take a plain, grocery store bouquet and turn it into something a bit more special for Fall. 

Step 1: Find a vessel and tape off four quadrants. This will help you position the flowers in the vase.

Step 2: Take apart the store-bought bouquet and separate flowers by color.

Step 3: Begin with the main, or largest flowers. In this case, I wanted to start with my sunflowers. I placed one in each quadrant. Be sure to cut your flowers at an angle.

Step 4: Add in your next bloom. I added in my coral roses to the front of the bouquet, placing one rose in one quadrant and two roses in the next. 

Step 5: Fill the middle of the bouquet with the bunch of magenta flowers. Make these taller than the flowers at the front of the bouquet.

Step 6: Add in a little freesia to different areas of the arrangement where there appear to be "holes". To make it look effortless, make some stems longer than others, and even draping over the edge of the vase.

Step 7: Add in your greenery and leafy accents.

There you have it! I think it looks a lot more special than a simple grocery store arrangement {even though it's still not an amazing bouquet we could make with a trip to the flower market!}  These blooms are sitting pretty on our new bar cart/butcher block piece for the kitchen. {Blooms for the Home} Bouquet Recipe

If there's one thing that always makes me smile, it's beautiful flowers. I'm sure most of you can relate! While my grandma gifted me with all my decorating and design skills, it was my mom who gave me my love for flowers. For as long as I can remember, there's always been fresh flowers in our home, a pretty bouquet sitting on my dresser when I come home from college, and lovely blooms sent to me on my birthday. My mom has quite the knack for flower arranging, too! 

When my good friend and amazing photographer, Christine, asked to do a little photo shoot, I was so excited. A striped dress, purple belt, spring-time wedges and beautiful flowers were enough to make my day. I picked all these flowers up at my local Whole Foods.  Here's a simple step-by-step to create a lovely bouquet. I always start with my main flower in the middle and group the accent flowers around it in layers.

Kale flowers and Lisianthus are no doubt two of my favorite flowers. Right up there with peonies, which I can't wait to get my hands on soon!
