Simple Organizing

We're getting real here today and going somewhere a blog post of mine has never gone before as a part of the Clutter Confessions tour. That's right, I'm showing you a glimpse at the inside of our junk closet. And by junk I mean, I actually need everything in the closet, but it looks like junk! It's not good and I'm not proud of it, so I'm serving myself a big dose of humble pie and showing you anyways ;) Hoping you guys can relate.

At the entry of our apartment, we have this tiny little closet (but I'll take it because it's a tiny apartment and we need all the storage we can get!) This is one of two legitimate closets in our apartment, so I am grateful for it, but man, it could stand to be a bit bigger ;) In the winter, it's where we keep our winter coats, so it's usually crammed with those. Gotta have options, right?! It also houses my wrapping paper and bows / ribbon, my Beautycounter samples, our filing cabinet which is full of my client projects, supplies, samples, desk stuff and other misc., then the top shelf is literally just things we don't know where else to put. Just being honest!
Please tell me you have a closet like this in your house, too.

Just for a little close up, you can see what a disaster the top is. That basket is filled with who-knows-what, apparently an old amazon box and a bunch of left over swag from the Bloom Workshop. Oh and a pillow for good measure. Ha!
I actually love organizing and I've tried organizing this closet a couple times, but somehow it always finds its way back to this state. I think I'm hyper-focused on what the visible areas in our home look like, that I forget that I need to give a little love to the closets, too. I also think closets and unseen spaces are also daunting to tackle. There's just so.much.stuff! How can I possibly organize it all?!

That's where my friend Melissa from The Inspired Room comes in. Her new book, Simple Organizing, came out yesterday and it's a great read, friends! It's quick, simple and chalk-full of tons of great ideas. She is always quick to remind that decorating and organizing is about simple steps and simple decor, it doesn't have to be grand or fancy or perfect. I was encouraged to tackle this closet with simple ideas in mind after reading her new book.

There are no reveal photos (yet) of my newly organized closet. I'm sharing it because it's on my April Goals list to tackle, and hopefully showing you the before will be my motivation to get it done!

Here are a few of Melissa's tips that really stood out to me in the book:

- Embrace the Domino Effect. She explains this as being a right (even very small!) organizing decision leading to more right choices that will positively impact your space and its organization. Same thing in the opposite direction. If your mail pile continues to grow and scatter, or your remote control collection (husbands, looking at you!) is getting out of hand with nowhere for them to live, these messes will spill into every place of your home. I simply took from this that you have to start small and you have to start somewhere.

- Small spaces need a plan in order to stay organized. That's our issue with the above closet! I think if everything had a more defined place, we'd be in better shape. I also think I can get more creative with the space. It's tall and narrow, so I'm thinking an accordion style storage thing that hangs from the rod might be nice. That way we'll have compartments for certain things instead of it all piling up on top.
- Set goals for the space.

- Pare down. I always think I've done this (I actually love getting rid of things!), but I think when it comes to the closet, I can throw away or donate even more!

- Make room for what you love. This doesn't necessarily apply to my closet, but I love the tip in general! And maybe I can try to take it to heart, even in the tiny closet ;) Because now when I open it, I just dread it.

- Create zones. I always tell this one to my clients and it's proven so helpful in clearing clutter and keeping things organized!

- Increase the amount of storage by putting hooks on the backs of doors or in cupboards. I loved the idea of putting hooks on the doors under the kitchen sink to hold gloves, brooms, and more.
All of her tips are so practical, which is something I really appreciate. You can grab the book for yourself here! And it makes a cute coffee table addition with the pretty and spring-y cover :)

6 Tips When Hosting Guests for the Holidays

I'm sure a lot of you are hosting family and friends in your home over the holidays. Even though the holiday's are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, I know it can also be a stressful time, preparing for guests in the midst of shopping, serving, and spending time with family.

I've come up with a few simple steps to take when preparing for guest's over the holidays! The last one is the key to it all. Here you go:

1. Get some fresh flowers for your coffee table. This will not only spruce up your home, adding life to the room, but it will also make you happy :) (It least it always does that for me!)

2. Fill a basket with fresh towels, left in plain sight for guests. Then they feel like they can help themselves. A stack of magazines is always nice, too!

3. We always leave out cotton balls, Q-tips, lotion and an extra roll of toilet paper (in an obvious place, so they are not stranded ;) ) so guests have everything they need.

4. Spruce up the nightstand with a few books, a candle and a cute print. Maybe even add a holiday pillow to the mix!

see my whole christmas home tour here.

5. Do a little light cleaning. The most important areas (to me) are vacuuming the public spaces (living room, kitchen) and the guest's bedroom. To save time, you can skip out on your own room and office. Next, wipe down the surfaces in those rooms with a damp rag or clorox wipes. This all takes about 30 minutes!

6. Finally, take a deep breath and relax. I know this can be a stressful time of year, but it doesn't have to be! For me, it helps to put this season in perspective. What are we really celebrating? Why are we rushing around digging up the "perfect" gifts, decorating like crazies, and stressing about the Christmas dinner recipes?

My family celebrates Christmas because God sent His son to the earth to be born as a baby. This baby turned into a man, who would then offer us eternal life in Heaven with Him. That is the reason for the season. That, my friends, is the gift and the reason we don't need to get crazy about Christmas and making everything perfect. God offers us grace upon grace, and for that I am so thankful. Your house is enough, your gifts are enough, your presence is enough. Focus on serving others in the best way you know how, instead of worrying what everything looks like and tastes like.Take another deep breath. See? That takes a load off. No need to stress!

How do YOU prepare for guests?!

4 Ways to Marry Form & Function

There is nothing I love more than beautifully designed, functional spaces. I think all interior designers would agree. Part of creating a functional space is determining how much storage is needed, where it needs to be, and what it needs to look like. Some people may think storage can't be pretty, but I'm a big believer in the marriage of form and function, so today I'm showing you some beautiful ways to get functional storage solutions in your home.

1. Baskets. This is a huge, gorgeous bathroom (If I had an emoji to slap in this blog post, it would have all the heart eyes by this bathroom!) Obviously not everyone has a bathroom this big, but we can take cues from the style and function. They placed a basket by the tub to store clean towels. This not only looks adorable and fresh, it also gets your towels out of a cupboard where they are probably shoved on top of each other. Additionally, the many drawers with great, shiny hardware is helping to conceal the clutter.

2. Shelving. You can get creative with this! I love this bookshelf concept, made with floating shelves. It frees up floor space and builds up, just the same idea as a skyscraper in a city. Or something like that ;)

3. Trays. Have I ever confessed my love for trays before?! This tray is from West Elm and almost all of my design clients walk away with a similar tray, perfect for catching the mail, creating coffee table vignettes like this one below, or displaying jewelry and accessories.

4. Unique Storage. I'm all about finding unique ways to store necessary items in a space. First of all, I love that Emily Henderson placed a large campaign dresser beside the bed. The depth of the drawers is key in providing great storage. Additionally, the bench at the foot of the bed is a unique piece with an open shelf for extra pillows, blankets, and more. If it was me, I would probably fill that bench with baskets so it'd be a bit more concealed storage.

What ways do you store things stylishly in your home? Today I'm over on Desiree Hartsock's blog sharing some of my favorite storage items for your home.

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Tips for Maintaing a Clean & Organized Home You Love

Did you know having a clean house or workspace helps you focus and get more done during the day? (Especially if you work from home, like me!) Working from home comes with its challenges and its plusses. I want to be focused each day, giving all my time and attention to my interior design clients or our workshops, and not having to stress out about my house not being clean or be distracted from little messes forming in the corner. I can tell you, when I first moved into my apartment and I had boxes everywhere, it was a nightmare. I felt so discombobulated! Now that the boxes are gone and Christmas decor is also packed up, I feel like I found a routine to keep my place clean.

Today I'm sharing a few things I do to keep my 600 square foot apartment looking put-together.

Everyday Routine:

1. Make my bed. The second I wake up, I make it. If I don't do it then, it ain't happenin'!

2. Check the trash every morning to see if I need to take it out on my way out of the door.

3. After my morning tea and toast (with peanut butter) on the couch, I always clear my dishes and straighten my pillows a bit before moving on to the next task. This might sound silly, but if my couch looks nice and put together, I can concentrate better on work! Whatever makes me love my home more, right?!

4. At night before I go to sleep, I always do any straggling dishes that are in my sink and wipe off the counters, so I can wake up to a clean kitchen. There is nothing better than a sparkling clean sink and kitchen! (Okay, maybe there are a few things...like, for example, clean sheets :))

Here are a few other tips for generally keeping a clutter-free home:

- Go through your closets periodically and get rid of things. Don't do too many at once, or ou will get overwhelmed. If it's a clothes closet, ask yourself if you've worn it in the last 6 months (and if it's a seasonal item that you only wear in summer of winter, ask yourself if you wore it last season). If the answer is no, throw.it.out. We don't want you to end up on Hoarders: Buried Alive ;)

- When you buy new things for your home or wardrobes, ask yourself if you have a place for it. If you can't think of one quickly, or your answer is you will have to get rid of something else to make room, you might want to wait.

- Don't start something without finishing it. If you open mail and get bills, paychecks, etc., take care of them right then! Recycle the envelopes immediately so paper clutter doesn't build up.

- Storage bins are your friends. So are baskets and other things to keep items in their place. I'm reorganizing one of my closets and going to get some storage baskets. I can't wait to show you!

- For any clients of mine who struggle with containing papers or mail, I always recommend getting one of these trays. Keeping mail or papers you need to go through on one tray in a designated area will help you stay organized, contain the mess and hopefully get to it in a timely fashion. Trust me :)

- Remember that your home should reflect you, what you love, your personal style, and things that have meaning to you. If an item in your home doesn't check one of those boxes, get it out of there!

- This post from The Inspired Room is really helpful if you want to declutter your home over the course of 2015. I'm excited to join in with some of the month's challenges!

- I once heard that having people over regularly helps you keep your house picked up automatically!

I love this quote that a famous textile designer shared years and years ago...

home organization, cleaning, love your home, organizing your house, maintaining a clean house

Do you have a daily routine you use to help you in maintaining a clean, organized home you love? The most important part, of course, is the last bit of the sentence: a home you love. What help you love your home?!

Hope these tips help. I'd love to hear yours! Happy Wednesday!

Get Organized: My Favorite Planner + Giveaway!

You know that feeling when you find the perfect dress, new pair of shoes, or perfect throw pillows for your sofa? Well, I get that feeling when I find a day planner I love and… I LOVE this one I'm here to tell you about today! Lauren, the creative director and owner of Elle & Co., has truly created the most amazing and well-thought-out planner I've ever laid my eyes on. Here's a tidbit about the Daybook from Lauren:

"The newly designed Daybook Planner features weekly and monthly calendar views and easily fits into any three-ring binder. With clean lines and plenty of white space, it's simple design helps clear the clutter for the business woman, college student, and stay-at-home mom alike."

My favorite part about what Lauren has created, though, are the amazing inserts you can buy for your planner. From recipes and meal planning, to client details, prayer and blog calendars, and so much more, she has really thought of everything you need to stay organized!

I'm already smitten with my Daybook and feel so organized. For my line of work, I especially love the Client Details insert. I take one with me to each client meeting and fill out all the fun design details we talk about that day. The design of the inserts and planner alike, are so pretty and clutter-free. {Okay, maybe I'm obsessed:) }

Since it's March already {what?!?!} and I'm guessing a few of us have fallen away from our "get organized" New Year Resolution, Lauren is being so kind and offering one lucky reader a Daybook and inserts! Enter below using the Rafflecopter Tool:
